I was not entirely sure what to expect before the workshop and whether it would simply be an induction to the room. But the morning was more of a lesson in screen-printing and was really fun and helpful. We
learnt the simplest form, paper stencil printing, and were
able to have a go ourselves. We layered our designs (mine

was a palm leaf design) to show how you can build an image up, even experimenting with the ink running low after a few prints. The outcomes are very effective.

As an introduction to the print room, this session was extremely enjoyable and helpful. It has refreshed my memory of screen-printing and I feel confident enough to now access the room when I am ready to experiment, if time allows. I was able to ask Jason how to achieve the overlay effect I am interested in creating digitally. This is all explained in the research document earlier in my portfolio.

From this experimentation, I will be able to reproduce the overlay effect digitally and have had this experience of hand printed techniques as an alternative to my final digital designs. Jason was really informative and approachable and because he has such an experimental style, he gave me lots of ideas and encouraged us to be open to possibilities and unexpected results.

Given more time and understanding of what was going to happen on the workshop, I would have prepared some designs relating to my FMP so that these practice prints were more relevant. However, the technique is the relevant part of this experiment, as this is one way printing would have taken place before digital design. I may choose not to make any further prints using this technique, as my time can be better spent experimenting digitally. Although my final outcomes will be digital, I am pleased to have had this printing experience.
