After though pooling a range of different cultures, I chose Japan and Britain as influence for my culture. The reason for this was due to the fact that Japan are known for their surreal aesthetics that make them so well-known. The particular focus was on the anti-fashion movement which emerged in the 1990s due to the rise of Rei Kawakubo and Yoji Yamamoto; both Japanese fashion designers known for their outrageous avant-garde fashion. What interested me about both cultures – leading to their subculture, is that the artwork arose from a wanting to stand out and not conform to what was standard at that particular time. In an age where graphic design is mainstream, electric colours are used by various creatives and possibilities on digital platforms are endless; I wanted to dial back a bit and pay homage to the people who helped give us this creative freedom.

• What I learned from Wyatt Knowles is that I can be playful with my designs – while some of his work (for me) can come across as borderline childlike, I still appreciate the involvement in which he as with all of his projects as all the images he works with are primary sourced.
• Mike Meires (art director of 032c) magazine works practices minimalism. His artwork doesn’t tend to be overcrowded with pastels; he sticks to a colour palette of

white, black, grey and a bold red (particularly when working with 032c magazine). I like that his work is simplistic and doesn’t overcompensate with colour. I’m inspired by his work due to the fact it reminds me that not everything needs to be overdone when I feel as though I may
need something else
• Jamie Reid is someone I cite as main inspiration generally due to his style which I consider to be experimental. It’s no surprise that a majority of my experiments feature working with collage which is primarily his influence. The added ‘edgy’ quotes and typography is also a reference to his work.
