Final Major Project by Claire Williams

Completed Book – (Assembled)

To complete my final book design, first I opened up the final Adobe Illustrator docs for each individual page. I then practiced printing out onto paper to check for colour and finish. Once I was happy with the print outs I decided to purchase printing card to produce my final designs on. I decided to produce an overlay for each page using silver card, these pages will be printed in black and white and will be cut out. The reason I chose the overlays to be in black and white was to frame each letterform so when you turn over the page it will reveal a flush of colour and texture. The silver card was chosen to add a touch of quality, as this book is a limited edition version.

I then printed out each page in full colour onto A4 white card, a total of 28 images, including the front and back cover and then I cut out each page using a guillotine. I used silver card to print out the images again but this time in black and white, these pages will be cut out and used as overlays for the coloured images in the book. I cut out each page using a guillotine and then using a steel rule, cutting knife and cutting mat I carefully cut out each letterform out of the silver card. I repeated the process for the remaining 26 letters and then cut out the shape of each page using the guillotine. Once I had all the pages of the book cut out, my book was ready to be assembled. Before I assembled my book I realised that the front and back cover needed to be thicker in weight so I decided it would be fitting for the front and back pages to be backed with black card. I used A3 black card and using spray mount I applied to the back of the front and back pages and then fixed them to the card and using a guillotine I cut each page out.

To assemble my book I had decided that I wanted it to be spiral bound, as this is the best solution for navigating my book. First I had to organise my book with each page overlaying onto the next from A-Z. I then decided to use a copy centre to take my book to be bound; I chose the smallest spiral and in white as this best matched the graphics on my book.
